The
Brifen Wire Rope Safety Fence system was designed
and developed to meet the UK Department of Transport's
criteria for motorway and dual carriageway safety
fences. Brifen uses computer aided design
facilities throughout its operation and an impact
simulation package was devised in conjunction with
The University of Sheffield to analyse vehicle reaction
to the safety fence and thereby speed up the optimisation
of design.
This system consists of wire ropes with the
lower pair interwoven between posts, which
are designed to collapse on impact. Each rope
comprises 21 wires of high tensile carbon
steel. Each of these 21 wires has a breaking
load of more than one tonne, capable of lifting
the weight of typical saloon car.
The kinetic energy of the impacting vehicle
is absorbed by both the wire ropes and the
posts, which collapse on impact. The vehicle
is guided along the fence coming safely to
rest.
Brifen WRSF is guaranteed for 20 years, requires
minimal maintenance and can be rapidly repaired
following a collision.
An additional benefit of Brifen WRSF relates
to the availability of emergency cross-over
points which can be dismantled in minutes
to allow rapid access by emergency services
in the event of a complete blockage of one
carriageway. More
