 Tensioned Corrugated Barrier

This type of barrier is the most frequently seen on the UK highways
It is a corrugated steel strip approximately 300mm wide and mounted 610 mm above ground on weak Z shaped posts.

This barrier absorbs impact by deflecting as a whole and assists the vehicle to decelerate, whilst guiding it back towards the carriage way in a gradual and controlled manner.

This principle is best applied to long straight runs as found on motorways, as it should not normally be installed on a radius of less than 120m.

There is no maximum length for an installation of TCB but the approach and departure ends must be anchored at ground level to heavy-duty end posts or to full height anchors.

The tensioner units consisting of two M24 bolts installed in special steel brackets fitted into the rear corrugations of the main beam elements, which are 3.2M effective length, and bolted to special adjuster rails at intervals of 70 Meters along the entire length of the Safety Barrier.

The most convenient method of installation is on driven posts which are, as the name suggests, driven into the ground at 3.2 M centers by means of a special hydraulic driving rig.

Driven posts are the quickest method but whether they can be used depends upon the ground conditions and must be subjected to trial pull tests. If standard posts fail then extra long ones can be used.

Concreted in posts take longer to initially install, but have one major advantage over driven posts.
They can be used with sockets cast into the concrete footings (into which the posts slide once the concrete has set). This makes future replacement after accident damage faster and easier, saving time and money.

Black plastic covers can be used to cover the socket openings to prevent the ingress of water and dirt. The covers have a tightly fitting aperture to match the z-shaped profile of the posts.
