Performance Standards for Vehicle Restraint systems, BS EN 1317

This standard is in 5 parts but only parts 1,2 and 3 are yet published. Part 1 describes all the technicalities and scopes for testing procedures, part 2 specifically describes the test procedures for longitudinal barriers s(afety barriers) and parapets, part 3 describes the procedures for crash cushions. Part 4 will be for teminals and tranitions and part 5 will be the durability requirements.

We are mainly concerned with part 2 which details the required tests and the classification of safety barrier systems. For permanent barrier systems there are 6 classes; N1; N2; H1; H2; H4a and H4b

N1 = 1500 kg car at 80kph and 20 deg impact angle.

N2 = 1500 kg car at 110kph and 20 deg impact angle.

H1 = 10,000 kg rigid truck at 70 kph and 15 deg impact angle.

H2 = 13,000 kg bus at 70 kph and 20 deg impact angle.

H4a = 30,000 kg rigid truck at 65 kph and 15 deg impact angle.

H4b = 38,000 kg articulated truck at 65 kph and 20 deg impact angle.

Each of the above must also be tested with a 900 kg car at 100 kph and 20 deg impact angle.

During the test no major part of the barrier shall become detached, the vehicle must not penetrate the barrier and there shall be minimum damage to the occupant compartment of the vehicle. Instuments within the vehicle measure various dynamic characteristics during the impact, and these measurements must be within prescribed limits.

The deflection of the barrierfrom its original position is measured during the impact and is classified in the following categories of "Working Width" W

W1
W2
W3
W4
W5
W6
W7
W8
