The correct Crash Barrier system to choose
depends upon where the barrier is to be located.
A system used on a public roadway will usually
face high speed impacts at sharp glancing
angles and, depending on the available space
for deflection, several systems are available
to deal with most scenarios.
Barriers in a Car park or in an industrial
situation are likely to encounter low speed
impacts at square angles and therefore require
a more rigid structure as deflection of the
beam is undesirable.
Barrier for
use on Public Highways
The systems used on Highways
here in the UK were designed by the Transport and
Road Research Laboratory (Department of Transport)
and have been proven in use over 25 years. In the
UK if you are installing on a public highway then
you are legally required to use this specification.
Tensioned
Corrugated (TCB)designed
primarily for use on central reservations.
Open
Box Beam (OBB)can
be used in single or double height and is
a rigid system for protection around structures
such as signs, bridge piers and lighting columns.
Brifen
Wire Rope Safety Fence.
A totally different construction using tensioned
wire rope to arrest the vehicle. A softer
system than OBB and TCB at lower cost but
requiring more radius space for increased
deflection. Marketed and supported by Hill
and Smith's sister company, Brifen.
Impact Barriers provide an adaptable
means of protection from impact on private roads,
industrial sites, car parks, around buildings, racetracks,
delivery bays. It is the same beam as used for TCB
and UCB but is mounted on more rigid posts. Please
